Beach House Designs Central Coast Nsw

The renovation by Slater Architects mimics a classic beach house

The weatherboard house on the Central Coast was certainly charming in its original state, but the owner/builder knew it was still well worth investing in the beach pad. Slater Architects took on the project and took it to the next level. The brief was to work with the bones and keep the theme of the original weatherboard beach house while converting it into a modern, light-filled coastal home that maximised the beach vistas.

Architect Cathy Slater says the idea of knocking down the cottage and building from scratch was out of the question.

"We couldn't knock the existing house down and rebuild because of the coastal erosion line," she says.

The alternative was to renovate, adding another storey with a master bedroom, ensuite and a private balcony with views over the beach.

The master suite features its own bathtub

"The original cottage was located forward of the erosion line, so we cantilevered the bedroom over that line to create the new master bedroom with the view," Cathy says.

Other highlights include a new double garage and double height entry foyer with picture frame windows flooding the entry with natural light.

"Upstairs we added two bedrooms with raked ceilings, ensuites, walk-in robes and private access to the outdoors." says Cathy.

"On the southern side of the house, we added a swimming pool that runs the entire length of the living area."

The home enjoys direct views of the beach

The kitchen and living areas are connected to the outdoors with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, providing ventilation, natural light and maximising the beach views.

In total, the renovation to the existing beach cottage included a new pavilion fronting the street, a rumpus room and two additional bedrooms with ensuites.

The existing house was perched on the dune overlooking the beach, with the land gently sloping towards the road, allowing Cathy to design a split-level, two-storey addition. She says the owners had envisioned creating a Hamptons-style beach house, using crisp white weatherboards and sandstone.

"Having that good relationship and clear brief meant the design process was smooth and easy," says Cathy. "It's so important to have a clear brief to make sure the design process runs seamlessly."

The casual coastal theme continues outside with recycled timbers

The alfresco area features recycled timbers and sandstone that ties in with the coastal theme and the natural setting.

"The facade is a classic beach house with white weatherboards and a Colorbond roof and the use of sandstone blended in with the natural environment," says Cathy. "The pavilion style mimics a classic beach house."
